Patti Smith - Just Kids

« Some of us are born rebellious »

How can I start reviewing this book when it left me speechless? From the first to the last word, I felt like I was part of something much bigger than me or anything I could ever live in my life. Patti Smith depicts the late 60’s and early 70’s in New York, in the middle of a major wind of change in society, art and music. She lived a life dedicated to art and work, along with Robert Mapplethorpe, her muse, best friend, lover and soulmate. The book focuses on that special relationship, from their encounter to the last days of Robert. The link between the two of them was unique and her way to describe it makes it so powerful and comparable to no other. The writing is simple and sober, yet so poetic and pure. I can hardly imagine how two souls can be lucky enough to find each other, and all the magic it involves. Just Kids is a tribute to Robert, and to their eternal friendship. At times I found it almost too overwhelming for my little heart, because from the beginning there’s no doubt on the outcome, but in the end, what remains is art and unconditional love.

This book is wild, full of incredible references to poetry, literature, music, art, and if you are as curious as I am, you will want to learn all about it. It breathes creativity and I know that for ever, Just Kids will be an undying source of inspiration for me, one of the best books I’ve read so far and that will always hold a special place in my heart.
